Emergency vs. non-emergency cylinders: what’s the difference?
In traditional non-clutched cylinders, the insertion of a key on one side prevents the use of the key on the other side. This can be an inconvenience in everyday situations, such as when a person forgets the key inserted on the inside, making access from the outside impossible.
Emergency function cylinders, on the other hand, allow simultaneous use of keys on both sides. This means that even if one key is inserted on the inside, it is possible to open the door from the outside with another key. This feature is particularly useful for:
- Family security: in case of an emergency, such as a child or elderly person who cannot open the door from the inside, access from the outside remains possible.
- Forgetfulness: if you accidentally leave the key inserted inside, you will not be locked out.
- Shared access: in environments where several people need access, such as shared offices or apartments, inserting a key inside does not block entry to other users.
It is important to note that the emergency function applies to key-key cylinders, where both sides require a key for opening. In the case of cylinders with an inside knob or half-cylinders used for garages, basements, and hatches, this feature is not necessary, since opening from the inside does not require a key.

If you lose the black keys, you can use the one/off to disable them and keep only the colored keys active.
