The security of homes, offices, and commercial premises is a matter of great importance, and over the years, research and new technologies have made it possible to respond in an increasingly precise manner to the increasingly multifaceted needs of the security industry. Keying systems offer a smart and functional solution for personalized, hierarchical access management since they eliminate or limit the need to use a different key for each lock.

It is, in fact, a technology that allows several locks to be opened with a single key, depending on the opening privileges granted. A concrete example can be an apartment building: we can encode a single key that allows all tenants to access all common and private spaces. The tenant will be able to open the access doors to the yard, cellars and attics, and with the same key will be able to access his own garage, cellar and attic, but not those of other tenants.

A really smart solution that improves life: in our example instead of a bunch of keys we will use only one, without decreasing the level of security offered by the system.

Keying systems make it possible to create customized hierarchical structures so that managing all locks in a building is as practical, functional, and secure as possible. Whether it’s an apartment building, an office, or any other environment, a keying system simplifies daily access management and improves the security of the entire environment.

MOIA has been offering expertise in the design and manufacture of keying systems for more than 50 years. The company portfolio includes extremely complex and articulated realizations, a know-how that can offer reliable and “tailor-made” solutions. There are different types of keying system, let’s look at them together.

Keying systems

The KA keying system, also known as the “same key” system, is a simple, versatile and economical solution for managing multiple locks with a single key. This type of system has no hierarchy among its various locks.

The KA keying system is ideal when you want to manage access to numerous doors or entrances with a single key, such as in a private home, where you want to use the same key to open the front door, garage door, entrance gate, and so on. The KA system is also a useful solution for small offices, stores or warehouses where a limited number of employees or staff need access to multiple locks.

The operation of the KA system is simple: all the locks in it have the same combination so that the key associated with that system can open all the locks.

One possible disadvantage of the KA system is the Lack of hierarchy or access control, which could create security problems in situations where it is necessary to restrict access to certain areas or people, and in case the key is lost, all locks will need to be replaced to prevent possible unauthorized access.

The KA trained system is a simple and reliable solution as well as cost-effective compared to other more complex and structured options.

The MK system is a popular security solution in the hotel industry, and in many other trades. In fact, this keying system can offer a briliant solution for set-ups where it is needed to manage many spaces with different authorization hierarchies such as offices, businesses, and stores.

This system provides a master key, (aka passe-partout), that can open all the locks in the system. Hierarchically inferior keys are provided too, that allow only certain locks in the system to be opened, depending on the permissions granted.

In a hotel or lodging facility, for example, management will have a master key to access all rooms, while guests will receive a key that allowsaccess only to their own room. This ensures greater security for guests while providing access control for hotel staff who have to deal with tidying up the rooms.

The MK System is not only employed in hotel settings: offices of structured companies, hospitals, clinics and nursing homes are just some of the facilities where it proves effective. The MK system allows for efficient security management wherever different levels of authorization are provided for entrering various spaces and rooms.

This system differs from others in its temporary nature, and is particularly useful on construction sites. During work, all locks (including apartment doors), can be opened by a single passkey. In this way, easy access for construction workers can be ensured. When work is completed, apartment owners will take over their property, and the passkey will deactivate upon insertion of the personal key to open the door to the flat.

The CM System, also known as “center cylinder,” is a functional and secure solution for apartment buildings, residences, as well as businesses and stores. Thanks to this system, each tenant has a key that allows them to open not only their apartment door, but also all locks related to common spaces, such as hallways, courtyards, and garages. Access to others’ private spaces is impossible because the keys are designed to open, in addition to one’s own, only the locks belonging to common spaces.

The CM System is the best choice for ensuring maximum convenience and safety in apartment buildings and residences, making life easier for those who live there, while providing the necessary peace of mind and protection.

The CMK System, also referred to as the “central master key,” is an ideal solution for distinct facilities that need to be interconnected. This system allows locks concerning different facilities to be opened by a dedicated key, such as those of two independent apartment buildings or companies.

This solution is particularly suitable for community facilities management: keys can be provided to blocks administrator, maintenance technicians, cleaning companies, vending machines refillers, and anyone who needs access to different buildings conveniently and quickly. The CMK system makes it possible to simplify access operations and reduce the number of keys to be carried, while still maintaining the full security of the various building units involved.

The GMK system is a security system that provides a hierarchical structure based on the division of access levels according to the individual role and hierarchical position in the organization: it is very used in large companies and organizations where it is necessary to ensure a high level of security and control access to different areas of the building.

At the top of the hierarchy are owners or managers, who have access to all areas of the building through a general master key. Instead, at the first level are managers who are provided a key that allows them to access the entire sector or floor, while at the second level are employees whose keys allow them to access only the areas where they perform their duties.

The GMK system is a very efficient system for maintaining high security standards and controlling access to different areas of the building in a flexible and customized way. In addition, this system makes it easy to manage keys and reduce the number of copies in circulation, further increasing the overall level of security.

Due to its highly articulated hierarchical structure, the GGMK Mastered System is particularly suitable for hotel facilities as well as hospitals or large residential complexes.

It basically increases the GMK by one level:

1. The director opens all the locks
2. Managers access areas and floors assigned to them
3. Cleaning and maintenance workers only have access to assigned rooms
4. The guest only has access to his or her own room.

Digital keying system

OMR also offers digitally and electronically managed systems on motorized cylinders and versatile solutions such as Hellock, a smart and agile electronic lock that can be opened via numeric codes, electronic badges, wristbands, and cell phones.

Most popular solutions. A graphic approach

Keying systems are indeed many and can be hard to get all different nouances at first approach. For ease of understanding, we have prepared a graphic version of the main keying systems in use.

In conclusion…

From same-key KA systems to more complex and hierarchical systems, such as the trained GGMK, each solution can be customized to meet the specific needs of the building or facility in which it is installed. MOIA has been in the security industry for more than 60 years and offers tailor-made keying solutions, thanks to long-time experience and technical expertise in designing and installing effective, customized systems.
